Undergraduate and graduate college students in California may be eligible to apply for various types of student loans to finance their education. Federal loans are recommended as the first choice for students to borrow as they are government regulated, fixed-rate and readily available through the state of California and also directly from your school. To begin the student loan application process, you must fill out and submit a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
After filling your FAFSA and receiving your award letters, you'll have an good indication of how much federal financial aid coverage you will have, and what else you might need. Keep mindful of the financial aid calendar to ensure you are meeting deadlines. Often students exhaust their federal loans before meeting their true cost of education including fees, books, supplies, computers, rent, transportation and other education-related expenses. One option for filling the remaining gap is a private student loan. While federal loan limits are set by grade level and student status, private student loans do not have any set limit and therefore can cover up to your full cost of education, including those unexpected expenses.
